Historical Context
Queen Victoria was crowned the 18th June at Westminster Abbey a year after she succeeded William IV to the British throne aged 18. The day is remembered for the splendid procession from Buckingham Palace to the Abbey, with some 400,00 spectators lining the streets, having taken advantage of the new railways to come to London for the occasion.
The ceremony took five hours and was attended by dignitaries from across Europe. Queen Victoria was crowned with the Imperial State Crown by the Archbishop of Canterbury before a 41 double royal gun salute rang out across London. This painting is by the court painter George Hayter who also painted her official coronation portrait.
