Historical Context
When it was built in 1967 the Ostankino Tower overtook the Empire State Building to become the tallest free-standing building in the world. It remains today the second tallest at 1,771 feet (540 metres) and has been the tallest structure in Europe for over 50 years.
Designed by Russian engineer Nikolai Nikitin, the tower was built to commemorate the October Revolution. Named after the area in which it stands in Moscow it also serves as a radio and television tower. Now also a major tourist attraction, the tower contains an observation deck and a restaurant.
