Biography: Alexander Lukashenko is Europe's longest ruling leader, having been the country's first and only President since 1994. Often called 'Europe's last dictator' Lukashenko heads an authoritarian government with close ties to Russia and the support of Vladimir Putin.

As a young man Lukashenko served in the Soviet army before becoming a state farm manager. He became president after leading an anti-corruption drive. None of his subsequent presidential elections have been judged as fair and the 2020 election result widely hailed as unfair ignited large scale national protests against Lukashenko and his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
