Biography: Alfred Stieglitz was an American photographer who is credited with having had photography be accepted as an art form in its own right. He was also known for promoting avant-garde European artists in the United States, particularly through the art galleries that he ran in New York City.

His early fascination with photography grew into an obsession that dictated the course of his life. He won his first prize in 1887 with the magazine Amateur Photographer for his photograph 'The Last Joke, Bellagio.' Subsequently he would continue his own photography while championing the cause of his chosen artform.
