Biography: Stroessner was President of Paraguay from 1954 to 1989, after seizing power by way of a coup d'état. This prepared the way for the 1954 general election in which Stroessner ran unopposed as other parties were prohibited from running.

While the Paraguayan electoral system was formally opened up in following decades, opposition was barely tolerated in practice.

Stroessner ruled Paraguay until he was himself overthrown by Andrés Rodríguez Pedotti with the support of the army.
