Biography: Anastasio Somoza Debayle was a Nicaraguan dictator, first taking office after the death of his older brother Luis Somoza Debayle. His rule was the last of the Somoza family, during which he oversaw a return to the harsh politics which had characterized the dictatorship under his father, Anastasio Somoza García.

Somoza stood down as President of Nicaragua in 1972, though as head of the National Guard he retained control of the country until 1974 when he was again re-elected as president. Ultimately he was forced out of power by the Sandinista National Liberation Front.
