Biography: André Malraux was a French writer that also served as the French Minister for Information (1956-1946) and Minister of Cultural Affairs (1958-1969) under President Charles de Gaulle.

He is best known for his novel Man's Fate (La Condition Humaine), published in 1933, which relates the tale of the failed Communist rebellion in 1927 Shanghai.

Malraux wrote a number of tales based on his experiences in Asia, where he travelled to at 22 with his wife Clara in 1923. The two went first to the French Protectorate of Cambodia, where he was drawn by the romantic reputation of the area and in emulation of T. E. Lawrence.
