Biography: Andrew Carnegie was a Scottish-American industrialist, best known for leading the expansion of the American steel industry during the late 19th century. With the wealth that Carnegie accumulated in this period he became one of the most significant philanthropists in the Anglophone world.

Carnegie began his life as a telegraph operator, then going on to work as a manager in the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. During this period, by a series of acute investments, Carnegie consistently accumulated the capital which would later serve as the basis of his success.

It was Carnegie's steel empire which made him one of the wealthiest men in the United States. His success was a combination of business acumen and good fortune in his connections, particularly with the railways where he had got his start.
