Gardner grew up in North Carolina in a poor farming family. She was discovered by MGM studios after a photo of her was sent to them. Initially given small roles due to her strong accent, Gardner's breakthrough came with her performance in "The Killers" (1946).
Her career flourished in the 1950s with starring roles in films such as "Show Boat" (1951) and "Mogambo" (1953), for which she received an Academy Award nomination. Gardner continued to act in major productions throughout the 1960s, including "55 Days at Peking" (1963) and "The Night of the Iguana" (1964).
Gardner's personal life attracted much attention. She was married three times, including to actor Mickey Rooney and singer Frank Sinatra. She also formed close friendships with figures like Howard Hughes and Ernest Hemingway.
In her later years Gardner faced health challenges, including lupus. She made her final screen appearance in the television series "Knots Landing" (1985).
