Biography: Barry Manilow is a renowned American singer and songwriter that has had 51 Top 40 singles, including 13 number ones. Some of his hit songs include 'Could It Be Magic' (1973), 'Can't Smile Without You' (1978), and 'Copacabana' (1978).

Manilow studied at the New York College of Music and worked at CBS while a student, subsequently he also studied Musical Theater at Juilliard. His career began in earnest upon meeting a CBS director that asked him to arrange some songs for a musical, instead Manilow wrote an entire original score.

Around this time Manilow also worked as a commercial jingle writer and singer, an experience to which he credits a great deal of his later success. He did work for household names during this time such as State Farm Insurance, Band-Aid, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pepsi, McDonald's, and Dr Pepper.

Manilow went on to work as Bette Midler's pianist and then as a producer on her albums. The two worked together from 1971 to 1975. It was also during this period that he released his debut album: Barry Manilow (1973).

It was not until Barry Manilow II (1974), however, that Manilow's career really took off. His first hit single was 'Mandy,' and this began a streak of hit singles and albums that led into his reputation today.
