Biography: Benjamin Britten was an English composer, conductor, and pianist who was a key figure in British music during the twentieth century. He created the opera Peter Grimes (1945), as well as the showpiece The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (1945).

Alongside these major works, he wrote other well-known pieces such as the War Requiem (1962) as well as 14 operas over his 28 year career. He also wrote chamber operas, including The Turn of the Screw (1954), based on the book by Henry James.

He had close relationships with many of the major musical figures of his day, especially his muse and partner Peter Pears. Other friends and colleagues included Mstislav Rostropovich, Kathleen Ferrier, and Eric Crozier. Britten, Pears, and Crozier founded the Aldeburgh festival in 1948.
