Biography: Bill Terry, also known as "Memphis Bill," was an American baseball player and manager, playing first baseman for the New York Giants from 1923 to 1936 and then managing the team from 1932 to 1941. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1954 and the Giants retired his uniform number 3 in 1984.

Terry made his professional debut at 16 years old, opening as a pitcher in the minor league in the Georgia-Alabama League and the FLAG League. After several years he transitioned to the American Association, which was the highest minor league level at the time.

After converting to first baseman in 1923, Terry drew the attention of the New York Giants who bought his contract. He made his major league debut in 1923 against the Cincinnati Reds.

While Terry's career slowed down in the 1930s, he smoothly transitioned to managing the Giants. After retiring he later bought a minor league team, Jacksonville Braves.
