Biography: Billy the Kid was a notorious outlaw of the American Old West, associated with the Lincoln County War in New Mexico. Born as William Henry McCarty, Jr., he adopted several aliases throughout his life, but is most well-known as Billy the Kid. His life was characterized by horse thievery, cattle rustling, and participation in lawless activities, which made him one of the most famous outlaws in American history.

His involvement in the Lincoln County War came as a result of his employment as a cattle guard by English businessman John Tunstall. When Tunstall was killed, Billy swore vengeance against those who had murdered his employer. This set off a violent conflict in which Billy and his associates, known as the "Regulators," sought retribution, leading to further acts of violence and lawlessness.

Billy the Kid's notoriety grew after he was captured and sentenced to hang for the murder of Sheriff William J. Brady. However, he managed a daring escape from the Lincoln County jail, during which he reportedly killed two deputies. This escape heightened his status as a wanted outlaw and led to a manhunt that ended with his death.
