Biography: Bob Goalby was an American professional golfer best known for winning the 1968 Masters Tournament. Goalby had a career total of 14 professional wins, including 11 on the PGA Tour, and influenced the Senior PGA Tour, now known as the Champions Tour.

Born into a working-class family, Goalby grew up in Belleville, Illinois. His athletic talents shone in high school and earned him a football scholarship to the University of Illinois. His eligibility was cut short, however, and he left college early. He later served in the United States military during the Korean War.

Goalby turned professional in golf in 1957 and claimed his first victory on the Tour the following year, earning him the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Award.

Throughout his career, Goalby secured 11 PGA Tour wins, but it was his 1968 Masters victory that stood out, albeit due to a scorecard mistake involving Roberto De Vicenzo which led to Goalby being declared the winner.

He was a member of the victorious 1963 Ryder Cup team. Upon joining the Senior PGA Tour in 1979, Goalby won two events and played a role in shaping the Tour.

Roberto De Vicenzo and Goalby kept a friendly relationship following the Masters incident. They even partnered in a team event on the Champions Tour. Goalby also contributed to golf broadcasting, working for NBC for 14 years.

His legacy in professional golf has been continued by his nephew Jay Haas, a 9-time PGA Tour winner, and great-nephew Bill Haas.

Goalby's legacy extended beyond his playing days. He lent his name to the Bob Goalby Golf Open charity event and was honored with dedications and hall of fame inductions in St. Louis and Illinois. Personal life included his three sons, with Kye Goalby becoming a golf course architect.
