Biography: The 23rd Prime Minister of Australia and the Leader of the Labor Party from 1983 to 1991.

Hawke led Labor to victory at four elections, making him the most successful Australian Labor Leader in history.

His government's many achievements included the creation of Medicare and Landcare, APEC, floating the Australian dollar, deregulation of the financial sector, the Family Assistance Scheme, making "Advance Australia Fair" the official national anthem, superannuation schemes for all workers and the Australia Act which removed all remaining jurisdiction by the United Kingdom from Australian law.

Hawke's Prime Ministership was controversially cut short when his Treasurer Paul Keating rolled him as leader of the Labor Party in 1991, over a disagreement on when Hawke was supposed to hand over the leadership.
