Biography: Scottish born Andrew Fisher was the fifth Australian Prime Minister and the first to lead the Australian Labor Party in a majority government, after winning the 1910 general election.

Prior to this he had led a minority government from 1908-09. In all he served as Prime Minister over three periods, the third during the early part of WWI from 1814-1915.

As Prime Minister Fisher oversaw widespread reforms and legislation that included the creation of the Royal Australian Navy in 1910, the Commonwealth Bank in 1911 and laid the foundation for the new capital Canberra in 1912.

He resigned in 1915 and later served as Australian ambassador to Great Britain.
