Biography: One of the "big four" of railroad magnates that built and controlled the new railroads that spread across 19th century America. Together with Collis P. Huntington, Mark Hopkins and Leland Stanford he formed the Central Pacific Railroad in 1861, aiming to link California to the east coast by rail.

Crocker served as the construction supervisor for the Central Pacific and organised the men, equipment and building of the western portion of the first American transcontinental railroad.

In 1871 Crocker became the first president of the Southern Pacific Railway. Crocker also dealt in banking and real estate. The Crocker National Bank took its name from his ownership.
