Biography: Charles Taylor is a Liberian politician and war criminal, who was convicted of aiding and abetting war crimes in Sierra Leone during the 1990s and 2000s. He served as the 22nd President of Liberia from 1997 to 2003. Taylor is the first former head of state to be convicted by an international criminal court since the Nuremberg Trials in 1945.

Taylor was educated at a Baptist school in Liberia and then attended Bentley University in Massachusetts, graduating with a degree in economics in 1977. Taylor subsequently held a number of positions in the Liberian government, including Director of General Services and Minister of Planning and Economic Affairs.

In 1989, Taylor launched an insurrection against the Liberian government, leading to a civil war that lasted until 1997. During this time, he was accused of committing numerous war crimes, including recruiting child soldiers and facilitating the illegal trade of diamonds. In 2003, Taylor was arrested and later convicted of aiding and abetting war crimes in Sierra Leone. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison, which he is currently serving in the United Kingdom.
