Biography: Chesley Sullenberger, known as "Sully," is an American retired airline captain who became a national hero in the United States after successfully carrying out an emergency water landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River in 2009. His quick thinking and calm under pressure saved all 155 passengers on board and led to widespread recognition for his expertise and heroism.

Prior to the Hudson River incident, Sullenberger had a career in aviation that spanned over four decades. He served as a fighter pilot for the U.S. Air Force in the 1970s, and later flew commercial planes for Pacific Southwest Airlines and US Airways. His extensive experience and knowledge of aviation undoubtedly contributed to his ability to handle the crisis on Flight 1549.

Sullenberger's successful water landing was swiftly followed by an outpouring of public admiration. He was hailed as a hero by the media, met with then President Barack Obama, and was given the key to New York City by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. His life and the dramatic landing were even depicted in the movie Sully (2016), directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks.
