Biography: Best known for founding in 1967 the first modern hospice, St. Christopher's Hospice, to provide palliative care to those in need and promote the principle of dying with dignity.
Saunders was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1979 and was given the Order of Merit in 1989.
She herself died in 2005 in the very first hospice she had established in south London.
