Biography: Colley Cibber was an English actor, playwright, and Poet Laureate known for his work in theater as well as his controversial reputation among his peers. His legacy includes his role as one of the first actor-managers and his autobiography, which offers a glimpse into the theatrical world of the 18th century.

Cibber began his acting career in 1690 with Thomas Betterton's United Company. While initially struggling, he ultimately succeeded in comical roles, particularly playing fops. His attempts at tragic roles were less well-received.

As a playwright, Cibber wrote 25 plays, with Love's Last Shift (1696) and The Careless Husband (1704) being especially successful. In 1710, he became a manager of Drury Lane.

In 1730, Cibber was appointed Poet Laureate, an appoinment for which he faced heavy criticism, particularly from Alexander Pope, who featured him in his satirical work The Dunciad. Cibber's poetry was not as well regarded as his theatrical works, and his laureateship was perceived as a political reward.

Cibber married Katherine Shore in 1693. They had 12 children, though only a few survived to adulthood. His will showed favoritism towards his eldest daughter, Catherine, suggesting a strained relationship with his other children.

He documented his life and times in his autobiography, An Apology for the Life of Colley Cibber (1740), which, despite its subjective tone, provides a valuable historical account of the period.

Cibber continued to be active in society and made his last stage appearance in 1745. Through his intersection with the careers of David Garrick and through his conflicts with figures like Pope, Cibber was a significant cultural figure in 18th-century Britain.
