Biography: Domitila de Castro, Marchioness of Santos, was a Brazilian noblewoman who is best known for her romantic relationship with Emperor Pedro I of Brazil.

Born into a middle-class family, Domitila was highly educated for a woman of her time, fluent in multiple languages, and had an affinity for music and arts. She caught the attention of Emperor Pedro I, and the two embarked on an affair that would last several years.

Although the emperor was married to Archduchess Leopoldina of Austria, Domitila quickly rose in prominence at the imperial court and was eventually ennobled as the Marchioness of Santos in 1826.

Domitila was a divisive figure at a court. She enjoyed the emperor's favor but drew the ire of many, including the empress and many members of the Brazilian elite. Despite this controversy, her influence was acknowledged.

The relationship between Domitila and Emperor Pedro I eventually waned, particularly after the death of Empress Leopoldina and the emperor's subsequent marriage to Amélie of Leuchtenberg. Nevertheless, Domitila remained an influential figure in Brazil after moving to São Paulo.
