Biography: Stanton was an American lawyer who rose to prominence as Secretary of War (1862-1868) under President Abraham Lincoln, where he served for much of the American Civil War (1861-1865).

While some Union generals criticized Stanton as a miserly micromanager, he has since been credited for effectively organizing the resources necessary to support the war effort and its success.

When President Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, Stanton remained Secretary of War for the first few years under President Andrew Johnson.

Ultimately Stanton returned to the law, and was nominated for the Supreme Court by President Ulysses S. Grant. Unfortunately Stanton died mere days after being confirmed for this new role.
