Biography: Eric Carle's most famous work is "The Very Hungary Caterpillar", the classic
children's story of a caterpillar that munched its's way through a lot of food to become a beautiful butterfly. Although the book has sold over 50 million copies and has been translated into 66 languages, it is just one of the seventy books he has written for very young children.

Born in America and educated in Germany, Carle had a successful career as a graphic designer and in advertising before illustrating his first book with children's author Bill Martin Jr, "Brown Bear, brown Bear, What Do You See?", itself a modern classic.

Carle's style is distinctive, with hand painted colleges, cut and layered into colourful stories, often with an extra dimension to them - cuts outs, even twinkling lights are added.

The recipient of many awards, in 2003 Carle was awarded the American Library Association’s Laura Ingalls Wilder award for lifetime achievement. A years earlier in 2002 Carle and his wife had opened The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts. Carle died in 2021 at the age of 91.
