Full Name: Fania Borach, known as Fanny Brice
Profession: Singing Comedian
Biography: Fanny Brice was an American comedian, singer, and actress most famous for her work in Broadway and vaudeville. She gained national fame with her stage performances in the Ziegfeld Follies, starting in 1910, where she created a comedic character named Baby Snooks.
In addition to her stage work, Brice transitioned to film and radio, making several movies such as My Man (1928) and Be Yourself! (1930). It was the radio version of her Baby Snooks character, however, that proved an enduring hit. Aired as part of the Good News and Maxwell House Coffee Time radio shows, Brice's Snooks sketches became one of the most popular features of 1940s radio programming.
Despite her comedic roles, Brice was also a vocalist who lent her voice to many popular songs of her era, such as "My Man" and "Second Hand Rose." Her life story was famously portrayed in the musical Funny Girl (1964)—produced by Brice's son-in-law, Ray Stark—which starred Barbra Streisand in the lead role.
