Biography: Bob Merrill was an American songwriter, composer, and lyricist who achieved considerable success in the worlds of popular music and Broadway during the mid-20th century. Known for his memorable melodies and clever lyrics, Merrill created numerous hit songs and contributed to several successful stage productions, leaving a lasting impact on American music and theater.

Merrill began his career in the 1940s, writing songs for the pop charts that quickly gained popularity. Some of his early hits included "If I Knew You Were Comin' I'd've Baked a Cake," "(How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window," and "Mambo Italiano."

In the 1950s, Merrill shifted his focus to Broadway, where he found further success as a composer and lyricist. One of his most significant achievements in the theater was the 1961 musical Carnival!, for which he wrote both the music and lyrics. The show, based on the 1953 film Lili, enjoyed a successful run on Broadway and earned Merrill a Tony Award nomination for Best Musical.

Merrill's most enduring contribution to Broadway, however, came with the 1964 production of Funny Girl, starring Barbra Streisand. The musical, which told the story of entertainer Fanny Brice, featured music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Merrill. The show's hit songs, such as "People" and "Don't Rain on My Parade," became instant classics and helped to launch Streisand's career.
