Biography: Franz Lehár was an Austro-Hungarian composer best known for his operettas. He was a leading figure in the "Silver Age" of Viennese operetta during the early 20th century. His work blended traditional Viennese waltz with the modern influences of his day.

One of Lehár's most celebrated operettas is The Merry Widow ("Die lustige Witwe"), which premiered in 1905. The story, which revolves around a rich widow and her countrymen's attempts to keep her wealth in their small nation by ensuring she marries a local, was an international phenomenon and continues to be performed today.

Lehár also wrote numerous other operettas, such as The Land of Smiles ("Das Land des Lächelns") and Giuditta.
