Biography: Fridtjof Nansen was a Norwegian explorer and humanitarian, known for his innovations in Arctic exploration and his efforts on behalf of refugees. His first major expedition, crossing Greenland in 1888, was the first recorded crossing of the island, setting the stage for his most famous voyage aboard the Fram, an expedition that attempted to reach the North Pole.

The Fram expedition of 1893-1896 was groundbreaking in its use of a specially designed ship to drift with the polar ice. Although Nansen and his crew didn't reach the North Pole, they achieved the furthest northern latitude to that date. Nansen's approach to polar exploration, focusing on scientific equipment and careful preparation, transformed the field.

After his career in exploration, Nansen dedicated himself to various diplomatic and humanitarian causes. Notably, he served as the League of Nations' High Commissioner for Refugees, where he initiated the Nansen passport for stateless persons, a crucial tool for refugee support. His efforts in this role earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922.
