Biography: Malenkov briefly succeeded Joseph Stalin as the leader of the Soviet Union after Stalin's death in 1953. He had been Stalin's favorite for much of the war period and before, becoming involved in his great purges of political opponents and discrediting World War II general Georgy Zhukov.

However, Malenkov's leadership was short-lived when he was outmaneuvered by his opponents. Nine days after his succession the Politburo forced him to give up his position in the Communist Party apparatus while retaining his premiership, and he served in a duumvirate with Nikita Khrushchev. In 1957, he attempted a coup against Khrushchev, but failed and was stripped of all his offices. He was sent to Kazakhstan and became the manager of the industrial plant, later becoming a member of the Russian Orthodox church.
