Biography: Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov was a Soviet military commander who played a pivotal role in World War II, most notably for his leadership in the Battle of Berlin, which led to the defeat of Nazi Germany. Recognized as one of the most prominent generals in Soviet history, Zhukov was a four-time Hero of the Soviet Union and was instrumental in several decisive victories.

Born into a peasant family, Zhukov was conscripted into the Imperial Russian Army during World War I, where he served with distinction and was decorated for bravery. After the Russian Revolution, he joined the Bolshevik Party and rose quickly through the ranks of the Red Army.

During World War II, Zhukov was a key strategist and leader in the Soviet military. He was involved in several critical battles, including the defense of Moscow, the Battle of Stalingrad, and the Battle of Kursk, which is often cited as the largest tank battle in history. Zhukov's tactics and operational command helped turn the tide against the Axis forces on the Eastern Front.

In 1945, Zhukov was chosen to lead the final Soviet assault on Berlin. The capture of the German capital was a symbolically significant event that marked the end of the war in Europe. Zhukov was present at the signing of the German Instrument of Surrender and was later honored with a victory parade in Moscow's Red Square.

Despite his wartime heroism, Zhukov's relationship with Soviet leader Joseph Stalin was complicated. Zhukov's popularity and influence made him a potential threat in Stalin's eyes, leading to his temporary fall from grace and assignment to regional commands after the war. After Stalin's death in 1953, however, Zhukov returned to prominence, serving as Minister of Defense under Nikita Khrushchev.

In his later years, Zhukov was once again demoted and then retired in the turbulent political climate of the USSR. He was nevertheless allowed to publish his memoirs, which gave a detailed account of his experiences during the war and his perspective on Soviet military strategy.
