Biography: During World War II, Eisenhower was the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces. In this position he oversaw all Allied operations in Europe, including Operation Torch in North Africa, the D-Day landings in 1944 and the eventual invasion and occupation of Germany itself.

Eisenhower assumed the presidency in 1953. Domestically the United States experienced a period of economic expansion and prosperity previously unseen as the economy adjusted to the post-war environment. This included the construction of the Interstate Highway System. To combat segregation he sent federal troops to enforce the desegregation of Little Rock in Arkansas.

The Korean War came to a conclusion with an armistice in the first months of his presidency, and much of his time was spent managing increasingly dangerous relations with the Soviet Union as the Cold War reached its height.
