Biography: Gianni Versace was an Italian fashion designer and founder of the luxury fashion house Versace. He is best known for his bold designs that helped define the look of the 1980s and 1990s, as well his close relationships with celebrities.

Versace was born in 1946 in Reggio Calabria, Italy, where he was influenced by his mother's dressmaking and the region's ancient Greek art. He moved to Milan in 1972 and launched his fashion career with his first shows in 1978, quickly becoming popular for his vivid colors, bold prints, and daring cuts.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Versace built his fashion empire with the help of his family, including his sister Donatella Versace. He is credited with helping to launch the "supermodel" era by prominently featuring top models such as Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista.

Versace had a dramatic flair and designed costumes for theater and opera performances, as well as musical artists like Elton John. He appeared in the "Say Say Say" music video with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson in 1983.

Versace was a master of celebrity culture, dressing and befriending stars like Princess Diana, Madonna, Tupac Shakur, and Eric Clapton. Tragically, he was murdered in 1997 by serial killer Andrew Cunanan on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion.

After his death, Versace's fashion empire passed to his niece Allegra Versace, while his sister Donatella became head designer.
