Biography: Pope Gregory I, also known as Saint Gregory the Great, was the bishop of Rome who is best known for his part in converting the British isles to Christianity. He is also renowned for his writings, on which account he is known by some as Saint Gregory the Dialogist.

Gregory oversaw the Gregorian mission, in which Rome sent a Christian mission to convert the pagan Anglo-Saxons of Britain. Starting in 596, by 653 this group of missionaries had established Christianity in the southern part of Britain.

His legacy remained well into the Middle Ages, during which time he was known as the "Father of Christian Worship" for his reforms to the Roman tradition. Gregory was also famously considered by the Protestant theologian John Calvin to be the last good pope.
