Biography: Guadalupe Victoria was a Mexican general and politician, best known as the first President of the United Mexican States. He fought against the Spanish Empire during the Mexican War of Independence, initially under José María Morelos before becoming one of the most prominent generals in his own right.

After the Declaration of Independence, Victoria served under Agustín de Iturbide in the First Mexican Empire. Tensions arose between the two, however, and ultimately Victoria would align himself with the revolt led by Antonio López de Santa Anna. He then served in the provisional government prior to the Constitution of 1824.

The first presidential elections were held in 1824, and Victoria was elected president. He sought to rebuild a country devastated by war and the economic blockade by Spain, to which end he also established relations with countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom. He completed his term and was succeeded by Vicente Guerrero.
