Biography: French courtier who worked for French fashion houses including Elsa Schiaparelli aged 17 until he opened his own house in 1952.

In 1953 Givenchy met the young actress Audrey Hepburn and they formed an influential professional and personal friendship. He made garments for many of her films and created her famous minimalist gamine style.

In 2006 his famous "Breakfast at Tiffany's" little black dress was auctioned for a record price for charity.

In 1969 Givenchy started a ready-to-wear line for men. He retired in 1995 though his courtier house has continued under other designers including John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Clare Waight Keller.
