Biography: Imre Nagy was a Hungarian politician that served as Chairman of the Council of Ministers, the equivalent of prime minister, of the Hungarian People's Republic from 1953 to 1955.

He subsequently sought to lead a revolution against the Soviet-backed government in 1956. As a result of his participation in this unsuccessful effort, Nagy was sentenced to death.

Nagy was a committed Communist and was involved in underground activity within Hungary during the 1920s. While he spent the 1930s living in the Soviet Union, Nagy would return to Hungary near the end of World War II.

After Hungary entered the Soviet sphere of influence, Nagy served as Interior Minister (1945-1946) and then de facto prime minister, first from 1953-1955 and then again in 1956.
