Influenced by artists like Barbra Streisand and Judy Collins, McGovern began singing at a young age and decided to pursue a professional singing career. After working as a secretary and performing with a local folk band, she was hired to record "The Morning After" in 1972, which became a #1 hit. She also received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 1974.

In the late 1970s, McGovern's pop hit "Different Worlds" from the TV show "Angie" (1979) reached #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
