Biography: Max Baer was an American boxer who was the world heavyweight champion from 1934 to 1935, taking the title from Primo Carnera. He eventually lost the championship to James J. Braddock in a fight that came to be known as the "Cinderella Man" bout. This fight was the basis of the 2005 film Cinderella Man, featuring Craig Bierko and Russell Crowe.

In 1930, however, Baer fought his most controversial fight against Frankie Campbell. He struck Campbell with such force during this fight that the man died a short while later, with Baer holding Campbell while he waited for an ambulance and then visiting his wife while he was in hospital. This incident haunted Baer, who despite his strength in the ring was otherwise a gentle man.

Baer's brother Buddy Baer was also a heavyweight boxer, and his son Max Baer Jr. would go on to be an actor.
