Profession: Roman Emperor

Nationality:
Roman Empire
Roman

Biography: Maxentius ruled the Roman Empire from 306 to 312 CE. He was the last emperor to permanently reside in Rome, and during his rule attempted to restore the city's importance within the empire.

Maxentius came to power during a period of political instability. He initially styled himself as "princeps invictus" rather than using traditional imperial titles. His father, the former Emperor Maximian, initially supported his rule but later tried to remove him from power.

During his reign, Maxentius focused on improving Rome's infrastructure. He initiated several building projects, including the Temple of Divine Romulus, the Basilica of Maxentius, and the Circus of Maxentius. These structures were meant to showcase Rome's grandeur and reinforce its status as the imperial capital.

Maxentius engaged in a civil war with Constantine, another claimant to the imperial throne. This conflict culminated in the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312 CE, where Maxentius was defeated and drowned in the Tiber River. The battle marked the end of his rule and the rise of Constantine as sole emperor.

Died: October 28, 312
Cause of Death: Drowned during battle
