Biography: Soccer star Megan Rapinoe had the year of her life professionally in 2019, leading the US side as co-captain, to win the FIFA Women's World Cup. The winger went on to be awarded FIFA's Best Women's Player (2019), the Ballon d'Or Féminin and Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year.

Rapinoe attended Portland University on a full sports scholarship before turning professional in 2009. She played for teams in the US, Australia and France before joining Seattle Reign FC in 2013.

Rapinoe first played for the US national team in 2006 but injuries then kept her out till 2009. She helped the US win a silver medal at the 2011 world championships and a gold at the 2012 Olympics in London. During the 2019 World Cup final she scored the decisive penalty to give her team the championship.

Rapinoe is known for her activism. Openly gay, she has publicly sided with Colin Kaepernick by kneeling before a game. Along with her national teammates Rapinoe sued the United States Soccer Federation for equal pay. Rapinoe also gathered national attention for publicly declaring that she wouldn't visit the White House while Donald Trump was President to which he responded via twitter.
