Biography: Australian soprano Nellie Melba was one of the most famous opera singers of her time and regarded with special reverence in her home country. Born Helen Armstrong, she took the name Melba after her native city, Melbourne.

In 1902 Melba made a triumphant return to Australia where she toured with great success. Although her roles were limited, Melba talent at self-promotion and her star quality meant she able to maintain a long and feted career.
