Biography: Jessye Norman was an American opera singer whose career spanned several decades, during which she became renowned for her performances in a variety of operatic roles and recitals. Notable achievements include winning multiple Grammy Awards, receiving the National Medal of Arts, and being decorated with the Légion d'honneur.

Her musical education began in junior high and progressed through Howard University, Peabody Institute, and University of Michigan. Her talent was recognized early on with a scholarship that led to numerous opportunities.

Norman's professional career began in earnest in 1968 when she won the ARD International Music Competition. She soon made her European operatic debut and performed at prestigious venues like La Scala and The Royal Opera.

During the 1980s, Norman returned to the opera stage and debuted in the U.S. She made a significant impact during the Metropolitan Opera's 100th-anniversary season. Norman performed at key cultural events, including presidential inaugurations and the French Revolution bicentennial.

Later in life, Norman continued to perform as well as founding the Jessye Norman School of the Arts in Augusta, Georgia. She also curated the Honor! festival, which celebrated African-American culture, and was involved in charity work.
