Biography: Nguyen Van Thieu was a South Vietnamese military officer that served as President of South Vietnam (1967-1975). He initially rose to power as the head of a military junta in 1965, and then won the 1967 presidential election.

Thieu's rule ultimately ended in 1975 with the Fall of Saigon, which heralded the victory of communist North Vietnam. He resigned and fled the country shortly before this, settling instead in Taiwan.

Throughout his rule, Thieu was supported by the United States as a partner in their war against the Viet Cong and North Vietnam. His regime was marred by allegations of corruption and authoritarianism, however this had little effect on their working relationship.
