Biography: Patrice Lumumba was a Congolese politician and independence leader who became the first Prime Minister of the newly independent Democratic Republic of Congo in 1960. His tenure was brief and ended in tragedy, but he remains an enduring symbol with many seeing him as a martyr of the African independence movement.

Before stepping onto the national stage, Lumumba worked as a postal clerk and traveling salesman. He gained prominence as a vocal advocate for independence from Belgian colonial rule, which led to his involvement in the Congolese National Movement (MNC). His charisma made him a standout leader in the independence movement.

Upon Congo's independence in June 1960, Lumumba was appointed Prime Minister. He faced immediate crises, however, including a mutiny within the army and the secession of the mineral-rich province of Katanga, backed by Belgian interests. His appeal for Soviet aid to quash the secessionist movement alarmed Western powers and widened the Cold War divide within Congo.

Lumumba's time in office was characterized by a focus on national unity and a refusal to be aligned with either the Eastern or Western Blocs. This neutral stance, combined with his desire to nationalize the country's rich natural resources, put him at odds with not only the Belgian government but also other Western powers.

After a power struggle with President Joseph Kasa-Vubu, Lumumba was dismissed from office and subsequently arrested. Despite international outcry, he was transferred to Katanga, where he was assassinated by private contractors in January 1961, reportedly with the complicity of Belgian and American intelligence agencies.
