Biography: Laurent-Désiré Kabila was a Congolese rebel leader and politician. He played a pivotal role in overthrowing the longtime dictator, Mobutu Sese Seko. Kabila subsequently became the country's president, serving from 1997 to 2001.

Kabila's early political activism gave way to an increasing disillusionment with Mobutu's regime, leading him to establish a rebel group. His opposition to Mobutu culminated in the late 1990s when, backed by Rwanda and Uganda, Kabila's forces marched towards the capital, Kinshasa, leading to Mobutu's ouster.

While Kibala initially enjoyed the support of neighboring countries like Rwanda and Uganda, relationships quickly soured, leading to the Second Congo War, which drew in several African nations. Kabila's presidency was also marred by allegations of authoritarianism and human rights abuses.

During the Second Congo War, Kabila was assassinated by one of his bodyguards. He was succeeded as President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo by his son, Joseph Kabila, who went on to lead the DRC for the next 17 years.
