Biography: Patrick Swayze was an American actor, dancer and singer-songwriter best known for his role in Dirty Dancing (1987). He also starred in Ghost (1990), among other films, and had a hit song with "She's Like the Wind" (1987).
Swayze developed an early interest in dance, influenced by his mother, Patsy Swayze, a choreographer and dance instructor. He pursued rigorous dance training alongside his athletic interests. Knee injuries redirected his aspirations from athletics to the arts, leading him to pursue a career in dance and acting in New York City.
He began his professional entertainment career as a dancer, then transitioned to acting with a stage debut in Grease on Broadway. Swayze's film career commenced with Skatetown, U.S.A. (1979). He later gained popularity with TV roles in M*A*S*H and the popular miniseries North and South.
The Outsiders (1983) presented Swayze as a promising actor among a young ensemble cast. His breakthrough role as Johnny Castle in Dirty Dancing (1987) earned him enduring fame and a Golden Globe nomination. Following this, he starred in Ghost (1990), receiving another Golden Globe nomination for his performance.
Swayze's career spanned diverse genres, with notable roles in Road House (1989) and Point Break (1991). He starred in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995), for which he earned a third Golden Globe nomination. He also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1997.
Beyond acting, Swayze co-wrote and recorded "She's Like the Wind" for the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. He was named "Sexiest Man Alive" by People magazine in 1991.
Swayze was married to Lisa Niemi for 34 years and struggled with alcoholism, which he eventually overcame.
In January 2008, Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer but continued to act, starring in a 2009 TV series, The Beast. He died in 2009 and was posthumously awarded the Rolex Dance Award in 2012.
