Biography: Paul Lukas was a Hungarian actor who found success in Hollywood. He started acting in Budapest in 1916 and moved to Hollywood in 1927. Lukas became a U.S. citizen in 1937.

Lukas played many roles in the 1930s, including in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Lady Vanishes" (1938). His biggest success came in "Watch on the Rhine" (1943), in which he played a man fighting against the Nazis, and for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Lukas was involved with the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals in the 1940s. He continued acting in films like "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (1954) and "Lord Jim" (1965), and his last film was "The Challenge" (1970).

Lukas also acted on stage and in television, including singing in the Broadway musical "Call Me Madam" (1950) with Ethel Merman. Lukas died in 1971 in Tangier, Morocco, while looking for a retirement home. He was buried in Spain and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
