Biography: Qi began as a carpenter, only later teaching himself to paint at 27. His family were peasants and he spent little time in school after suffering from sickness in his youth. When he came across the 'Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden,' he was first inspired to take up painting.

After taking himself much of the way, he received training from Hu Qinyuan; at which he realised that his art could be more than a dream, instead becoming a full-time career.

After this, Qi travelled throughout China; during this time he met Wu Changshuo in Shanghai, who mentored him for a while. Later after Qi returned to settle in Beijing, he was also influenced by Chen Shizeng.

Throughout this period, acclaim for Qi's work continued to grow. His paintings were noted for the variety of his subjects, from plants and animals to opera performers. The natural style of his painting also meant it was popular among political and artistic collectors alike.

Importantly, his work also lacked the western influence characteristic of Chinese artists at the time. Instead he demonstrated an entirely homegrown Chinese art style, which while reverent of traditions also created for itself.
