Biography: Radovan Karadžić is a Bosnian Serb politician, best known for his leadership of the Serbian side during the Bosnian War (1992-1995). He was subsequently charged by the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia with war crimes and crimes against humanity, and found guilty of genocide.

Karadžić began his career as a psychiatrist before turning to politics. He was a co-founder of the Serb Democratic Party which formed in 1989 and was intended to unify the Serb community within Yugoslavia the face of a potential secession by Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The SDS began to establish "Serb Autonomous Regions" in 1991 and prepared itself to take power in the event of secession. After Bosnia and Herzegovina was recognized as an independent state in early 1992, Karadžić was elected President of Republika Srpska.

Karadžić led the major Serbian contingent during the Bosnian War, during which time he was aided also by General Ratko Mladić who commanded the Army of Republika Srpska. Despite tensions between the two during the war, they were both subsequently convicted of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
