Biography: Tammy Duckworth is an American politician and retired military officer who has served as the junior United States Senator from Illinois since 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 and to the U.S. Senate in 2016, becoming the first Thai-American woman to be elected to Congress.

Duckworth is a former U.S. Army helicopter pilot, who served as a commissioned officer in the Army Reserve, the Army National Guard, and the regular Army, retiring in 2014 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. She was deployed to Iraq in 2004, where she was injured in combat, losing both legs and partial use of her right arm, which led to her becoming the first female double amputee from the Iraq War.

In addition to her political career, Duckworth has worked as an advocate for veterans and disability rights, serving as the Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs in the Department of Veterans Affairs from 2009 to 2011. She has received numerous awards and honors for her service, including the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Medal. Duckworth has also made history by becoming the first U.S. Senator to give birth while in office in 2018.
